Sustainable Design

The Port of Los Angeles is committed to green growth. As reflected in its Strategic Plan Mission and Environmental Management Policy, the Port is striving to construct projects and operate in ways that demonstrate the importance of stewardship and environmental, social, and economic sustainability.

The San Pedro Waterfront Project is meant to showcase the Port's commitment to sustainability. This 400-acre megaproject provides a wonderful opportunity to implement the Port's sustainability program and policies through the following design elements:

  • Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Certification Silver (at minimum) would be required for all new development in buildings larger than 7,500 square feet, consistent with the Port's Green Building Policy.
  • Reclaimed water would be used for maintaining landscaping, water features (like fountains) and flushing toilets in new buildings.
  • Solar power would be incorporated into all new development to the maximum extent feasible. Within the project area, photovoltaic panels would be integrated into the roof of the existing cruise terminal building at Berth 93, at the proposed Inner Harbor parking structures and at the Ports O' Call parking structures along the bluff.
  • Landscaped, "green" rooftops, complete with solar panels, on the proposed parking structures serving Ports O' Call (under the bluff directly west of Sampson Way) to minimize visual disruption toward the waterfront from Harbor Boulevard.
  • Drought-tolerant plants, native plants and shade trees would be incorporated in the overall landscape design.
  • Over 27 acres of new green open spaces are being integrated into the project area, including San Pedro Park (18 acres), Outer Harbor Park (6 acres) and Fishermen's Park (3 acres).
  • Permeable paving would be installed to reduce storm run-off and improve water quality.
  • Port Sustainable Engineering Design Guidelines and Sustainable Construction Guidelines will be followed for the design and construction of new project elements.
  • Numerous pedestrian, bicycle and Waterfront Red Car Line connections are integrated into the overall project design to enhance public access to and throughout the waterfront, providing a waterfront visitor experience that is not dependent on the automobile. These linkages were designed to strengthen connections to Downtown San Pedro, the California Coastal Trail, and LA Harbor Coastal Trail Spurs.
