After more than 10 years of discussion, planning and plan revisions, the San Pedro
waterfront Project is approved, paving the way for vision to become reality.
with a project this large, many considerations come into play. Here are
answers to some of the key questions that people in the community want to know.
Question: Is there an implementation plan in place?
Answer: Yes, there is a published Implementation Guideline.
This document provides a good overview of the recommended protocols to guide the
project decision-making process.
The Implementation Guideline provides information on next steps, implementation,
and specific project elements. The Guideline will be updated and enhanced
as the Waterfront Project progresses. To see the current Implementation
Guideline,

Question: Is there a published project schedule?
Answer: To the extent possible, a tentative schedule has been
created that lists the major projects and a general timeframe for implementation.
This schedule is a starting point and, as with any project this large and
important, certain elements are likely to change based on economic or
operational factors. To see the current implementation schedule,

Question: How are projects going to be paid for?
Answer: Funding for any of the Waterfront projects depend on a
variety of factors. In general, the Harbor Department will use its own
cash generated from cargo operations, tenant leases, grant funds, third party sponsors and
short and long-term borrowing -- or some combination of each. before any
project proceeds, financial factors will be fully analyzed from a cost/benefit
standpoint to determine if both the expenditure and the funding are appropriate
to meet the community's expectations.
Question: Will the public have a voice in the ongoing planning
process? If so, how?
Answer: Absolutely! The Port intends to hold a public
Waterfront Kick-Off Meeting in early 2010. Everyone will be
invited and encouraged to attend, and the date and time will be published in a
future edition of
this Project Update eNewsletter, as well as at
www.portoflosangeles.org and
www.lawaterfront.org.
The San Pedro Waterfront belongs to the community and we need the community to
remain involved!
