Nearly a century ago, the area around 22nd Street and Sampson Way in San
Pedro served an industrial purpose - as a tank farm used to store petroleum products.
But times have changed and, with it, this area across from 22nd Street Landing is ready to
be used for something else that is vitally important to the
community: waterfront-adjacent open space for residents and visitors to enjoy
365 days a year.
On Saturday, January 9, everyone is invited to join Mayor Villaraigosa,
Councilwoman Hahn, Port commissioners and other VIPs to celebrate the opening of the
brand new 22nd Street Park - the first new San Pedro park to open in years.
The festivities get underway with a dedication ceremony at 11 a.m. on 22nd
Street between Miner Street and Via Cabrillo Marina. Between 11:30 a.m.
and 2 p.m., the celebration continues with a free hot dog lunch and an afternoon
full of organized games and activities for families, kids and much more.
The new 22nd Street Park is just one of a number of wonderful new open space
venues designed to "bring the Port to people and people to the Port." Key
features of the 22nd Street Park include:
- 16 acres -
Large, flat grassy area for recreation -

Bocce Ball courts
