WILMINGTON WATERFRONT: Progress Report

Connecting the community with the waterfront, creating open spaces for people to enjoy and enhancing the overall quality of life in the area, are all part of the vision of the Wilmington Waterfront Project.

The "Wilmington Waterfront" Project actually includes two complementary projects - the harry Bridges Boulevard Buffer Project and the Wilmington Waterfront Project.  With a festive celebration less than one year ago, work began on Phase I - the Harry Bridges Boulevard Buffer, which includes:

-  Walking trails
-  Water features
-  An adventure playground
-  Plazas and public art
-  Terraced spaces providing a view of the Port
-  A distinctive pedestrian bridge

Already 40% complete, major elements currently underway include:

-  Grading
-  Main retaining wall
-  Storm drains and sewers
-  Electrical conduits and utility installations
-  Bridge abutment and bents
-  Removal of contaminated soils

Exciting progress will continue to be made next year with the construction of the Pedestrian Bridge and other elements of the project.  As planned, the Harry Bridges Boulevard Project is on schedule for completion in 2011.  Stay tuned for more updates on this portion of the project, as well as for Phase ii - the 94 acre Wilmington Waterfront project featuring a land bridge connecting the community to the waterfront, 11 acres of open space, plazas and event spaces, waterfront promenade, floating docks, green technology business spaces, Red Car museum and a 200-foot observation tower.
