It was a beautiful day to open L.A.'s newest park - January 9, 2010 was clear,
warm, with just a
bit of overcast to keep the sun from blazing down. More than 2,000 people,
and a least 100 dogs(!!!), came out for the grand opening ceremony and community
picnic at 22nd Street Park at the Port of Los Angeles.
Leading the ceremony was Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, 15th District
Councilwoman Janice Hahn, Harbor Commission Vice President Jerilyn López
Mendoza, Harbor Commissioner (and San Pedro resident) Joseph Radisich, and Port of
Los Angeles Executive Director Geraldine Knatz. Other speakers included
June Burlingame Smith of the Coastal San Pedro Neighborhood Council, Scott
Lane of the San Pedro Youth Coalition, Camilla Townsend of the San Pedro
Chamber of Commerce, and Daniella Caccavalla, an 8th grade student from Dodson
Middle School. Those attending had a terrific time playing a variety of
different games and activities. There was an inflatable obstacle course, an
inflatable soccer game, a hacky sack skills area, a frisbee toss, a beach ball
obstacle course, two bounce houses, sack races and a bean bag toss game for
local families to enjoy. In addition, more than 800 free hot dog lunches
were served by the Los Angeles Fire Department Historical Society.
Guests also provided their own entertainment at the park by bringing picnic
lunches, footballs, bocce balls for the two courts at the park, and a variety of
other outdoor recreational equipment!
