PEDESTRIAN BRIDGES GO UP IN WILMINGTON

Wilmington has a new landmark - the King Street pedestrian bridge along Harry Bridges Blvd.  This towering sail-like structure is part of the Harry Bridges Buffer project in Wilmington.  Featuring a main mast that is 100 feet tall, the bridge will safely carry visitors along from one side of King Street to the the other.  Three smaller pedestrian bridges are also being built in the Buffer project along Harry Bridges Blvd.  Not only do the bridges function as a way to safely move people visiting the Buffer, they also provide excellent views of the Port.

The entire 30-acre Buffer project is now nearly halfway complete.  More than 2,000 feet of retaining walls have been completed and about 150,000 cubic yards of soil have been used to create the berm portion of the Buffer. Additionally, the foundations have been put in place for the two restroom facilities in the project and the last piece of the 6 1/2 foot-diameter storm drain is scheduled to be installed under harry Bridges Blvd. later this month.

We are happy to report that the Harry Bridges Buffer is on schedule to be complete by summer of 2011.
