Proposed Promenades, Parks and Plazas: Places for People
to Visit and Enjoy.

A walk along the San Pedro waterfront today is a relatively short one that encompasses the Cruise Ship Promenade, popular Gateway Fanfare Fountain, and the Harbor Blvd. Parkway Promenade extending southward from the Fanfare Fountain to 5th Street. Opportunities to view the great ships coming and going are few and far between. But the San Pedro Waterfront Project will change that, providing easy access to the water’s edge while enhancing business, transportation and infrastructure in a new and exciting fashion.

The crown jewel of the proposed plan is a world-class “Grand Waterfront Promenade,” a beautifully landscaped, continuous eight-mile-long pedestrian boardwalk that winds along the water’s edge, through public plazas, downtown harbors, maritime cultural venues, outer harbor marinas and 27 acres of new park space.

Beginning at the Vincent Thomas Bridge and continuing all the way to the Cabrillo Beach breakwater, the Waterfront Promenade will provide a rich array of offerings that will engage and stimulate senses of everyday strollers and first-time visitors.

A Typical Tomorrow on the Waterfront

The San Pedro Waterfront Proposed Project is designed for people of all ages to use and enjoy 365 days a year.  Imagine this typical day along the new San Pedro Waterfront…

First

  • Start your morning with coffee or breakfast downtown and then stroll to the new Town Square, a true community gathering point anchored by a new Downtown Civic Fountain and the famous Los Angeles Maritime Museum.  Watch with awe as some of the world’s largest ships sail through the Port’s Main Channel.

Then…

  • Walk to either to the new Downtown and North Harbors or to the 7th Street Harbor to watch as skippers tie up for a day visit to San Pedro, or prepare for a day of boating.

Next…

  • Stroll north a bit to see the new Ralph J. Scott Historic Fireboat Museum.  You don’t have to be a kid to get excited about these maritime marvels.  After that, take a 10-minute walk north to enjoy the festive dancing waters at the Fanfare Fountain entrance to the World Cruise Center in the inner harbor.

For a change…

  • Now catch the Waterfront Red Car for a short ride south to the wonderfully revitalized Ports O’Call area.  Enjoy the unique shops and, assuming hunger has caught up with you by now, enjoy seaside cuisine served with an incredible view.

Now that you have your second wind…

  • Continue down the promenade as it winds around the commercial fishing fleet based in the SP Slip on the south end of Ports O’Call.  From there, walk across Sampson Way and relax on a park bench as you watch people of all ages enjoy the beautiful new San Pedro Park between here and Miner Street.

If your feet are getting weary…

  • Or for a change of pace, hop back on the Waterfront Red Car line and let it take you all the way to Cabrillo Beach.  Yes, you’ll miss out on strolling the promenade along the Cabrillo Marina, and seeing the new Outer Harbor Park where some of the greatest cruise ships in the world berth. But the view from Cabrillo might make up for it, and you will be left with something else exciting to explore on your next San Pedro waterfront excursion.
