Sampson Way Design
Public Workshop #2 - March 24, 2011

On Thursday, March 24, the Port of Los Angeles High School cafeteria was packed with 50 community members anxious to see the updated designs for the Sampson Way Project.  This meeting was the second public meeting on the project and designs incorporating comments heard at the first public meeting were incorporated.

The evening began with a presentation recapping the project, the original designs and the new designs based on input from the first meeting.  Those gathered then broke into groups to see the designs up close and work one-on-one with Port staff and consultants to answer questions and discuss possibilities.  Keeping with the sustainable format from the first meeting, breakout tables were outfitted with computer screens instead of paper renderings for the community to review.  Comments from each group were recorded on large tablets of paper and then presented to the entire group at the end of the evening.

With the changes to the San Pedro Waterfront and an emphasis on connecting the waterfront areas with the rest of San Pedro, and the downtown area in particular, a new plan for the Sampson Way area needs to be developed.  Central to the plan for this area is the question of how to handle/utilize Harbor Boulevard.  With waterfront traffic being diverted to Sampson Way as the primary southbound route, designs for Harbor Boulevard and its connection to Sampson Way are numerous.

In addition to the routing of Sampson Way and Harbor Boulevard, options were presented for pedestrian access from the bluffs areas to Ports O' Call Village.  Options for a bridge and staircase were shown.
